Starring Rod Beattie Directed by Douglas Beattie
Thursday November 22, 8pm	$32
As the first frosts come to Persephone Township, Walt and Maggie Wingfield are all set to welcome new life to the farm. She's expecting and he's nesting. But Walt is alarmed about the old feuds that divide the neighbours and disturb the tranquility of the community. His attempts to mend other people's fences meet with a resistance as stiff and cold as the weather itself. And the biggest challenge to all of them is looming on the horizon. “Chockfull of the same puckish humour and keen eye for human foibles that made its predecessors so enjoyable.” - Victoria Times Colonist www.wingfieldfarm.ca Presented by Meaford Hall
Biophilic Design is an innovative way of designing the places where we live, work, and learn. We have classically designed in ways that both degrade the environment and alienate us from nature. The recent trend in green architecture has decreased the environmental impact of the built environment, but it has accomplished little in the way of reconnecting us to the natural world, the missing piece in the puzzle of sustainable development. This film takes the viewer on a journey in search of buildings that connect people and nature –hospitals where patients heal faster, schools where children’s test scores are higher, offices where workers are more productive, and communities where people know more of their neighbors and families thrive. Biophilic Design points the way toward creating healthy and productive habitats for modern humans. www.biophilicdesign.net/ Running time 60 minutes
'Truck Farm' is a whimsical, musically-narrated, documentary film about urban agriculture. Using green-roof materials, heirloom seeds, and a healthy dose of optimism and humor, the film maker, Ian Cheney, created a mobile community farm in his ’86 Dodge Ram that yielded a wide range of vegetables and explores other creative, quirky, community-based agriculture efforts all over New York City. By showing us the possibilities of where and how we can grow food in the city--from truck beds, to windows, to roof tops, to abandoned baseball fields--we can begin to imagine and envision a very different connection to food grown near where we live. It is the ultimate local food argument, with a distinctive urban edge, as seen through a food justice lens. www.truckfarm.org/ Running time 48 minutes
Filmed over nearly three years, Waste Land follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Waste Land offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. www.wastelandmovie.com Running time 99 minutes
